Methods & Materials for Maintenance of Historic Buildings

This three day beginner-level course is designed for those with little or no prior museum experience and includes both lecture material and practical, hands-on lab work. This course is designed to introduce you to the preservation, documentation, and maintenance of the physical integrity of museum collections. This course begins with agents that deteriorate and how to mitigate their damage to collections. You will be introduced to physical properties of inorganic, organic, composite, and textile materials. The course then turns to the study of collections packing, shipping, and storage methods as well as collections hazards, safety and emergency planning. While intended as a general introduction to those without any museum experience, the course does include hands-on labs and exercises in addition to lecture content.
