2nd PTN Regional Shop Stop, Friday, November 19th with George Martell, Designer Metalsmith, at
Martell’s Metal Works

Hot Metal - The Art of Blacksmithing - the art of forging decorative metal and some tool making

George Martell, a professional blacksmith since 1984, started out by making tools for refining gold and silver in his shop. The work in the shop transitioned from tool-making to high-end ornamental work and restoration. He works with a combination of wrought iron, steel, aluminum, bronze and copper. George’s work can be found at numerous public locations, as well as many private homes. Most of his work in private homes is custom interior work like railings for grand stair entries. George has also taught blacksmithing classes at the Rhode Island School of Design for many years.

The Shop Stop program is designed to introduce tradespeople to tradespeople, to exchange skills and provide a networking opportunity for all. The Shop Stop is a gathering of trades people, students and allied disciplines dedicated to furthering their understanding of the structures that are being worked on, and the skills it takes to do the work.  The Stop Shops are a series of informal meetings that move from shop to shop. Any PTN member is invited to host an event, and all are welcome to attend. Each meeting will feature a “hands on” demonstration of different preservation trades skills, lunch and a chance to connect with friends and colleagues.
